Leh Trip – Day 5

We visited very beautiful Pangong Lake along with 3 Idiots spot and returned on the same day. Also encountered the marmoth and yak for the first time.

We had two option while booking the package either we could stay overnight at Pangong lake or return same day. We went ahead with the same day return plan to Pangong lake. This lake is situated at 14000 ft and one needs to drive through Chang La pass. Chang La means “pass towards the south”.

The journey began early in morning. The road were very narrow and curvy as we passed through Chang La pass. Chang La pass is also covered with snow always. We clicked few pics here as well. It is located at 17,590 ft above sea level.

While at Khardungla we were feeling dizzy but here we were quite fine and by now acclimatized to the weather. There is also a world’s highest research station managed by Defence Research and Development Organisation.

We reached the Pangong lake site by afternoon. This lake witnesses seven shades of blue under normal climatic conditions but weather is always unpredictable at higher altitudes. The lake is bisected by International border between China and India. And did i tell you about the specialty of this lake ? it is the same lake which was shown in movie 3 Idiots, in the last scene. After this movie, Leh Ladakh tourism has increased triple fold. There was yak ride too near the lake for 100 rs per person. We took lots of pics and had our lunch at one of the eateries. The weather was good.

We also insisted our driver to take us to 3 idiots spot. It is another 2-3 kms from the entry to the lake.

The place was beautiful and magical. Winds were strong too. There were many Royal Enfields parked too.

There was a jeep stuck in the water almost half inside the water and lots of drivers tried to pull it out but alas everyone was unsuccessful and ultimately BSFwas called and the car was pulled back.

Other side of the lake, there are beautiful mountains.

We also saw Marmoth on our return journey, which is one of the rare site to locate. Marmoth are large squirrels. Marmoths hibernate in winter and are usually seen during the summer season only. Marmoths are found in Ladakh region only within India. Many of the tourists feed them and then there could be a threat to these rare species from predators. Since they may instead prefer humans to feed them every time. We shall not biologically disturb the life cycle of these species. Our driver and coach strictly refused use to feed them anything and also there were some tourists already stopped and trying to feed them. Our driver denied them strictly too.

Also, we spotted local cows, first i though it is yak but then later the driver told us that they are hairy by genes in these areas as it is chilly always. This is an example of adaptation of habitat.

We traveled back to Leh same day and were really damn tired. It was one of the most tiring journey we had that day. We had dinner at the hotel and retired to bed early.
